1845 is the year of birth of Muri-Gries: the Benedictines, expelled from the convent of Muri in the Swiss canton of Aargau, received as a donation in 1027, took up residence in what in the meantime became the Abbey of the Augustinian canons of Gries. The monks apply the traditional Benedictine rule "ora et labora" also in the convent vineyards. The Muri-Gries winery opens its doors at the beginning of the 20th century. The sale of bulk wine begins: in the ancient cellars mature fine wines such as Santa Maddalena and Malvasia, Lagrein Kretzer and Pinot Grigio (Ruländer). In 1968 the Cantina Convento experienced a decisive turning point: for the first time the wines of the convent were bottled in grand style inside the convent itself. A coherent philosophy based on quality is becoming increasingly popular. In 1985 Lagrein rises to first place in the wine hierarchy of the Convent Winery and begins to show its true profile. Muri-Gries recognizes the values of ancient, local and often neglected grapes. Awareness of one's own tradition receives new lymph. The secret of the success of the Cantina Convento consists in focusing on the quality of its grapes, working with its own resources and developing them further. |
